Who we are. What we do.
Fifty plus years ago, while serving as head of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Thacher Longstreth envisioned an organization that would serve beyond the city limits and encompass the entire Delaware Valley. Thus was born The PENJERDEL Council.

The goal of PENJERDEL has never been to compete with or run counter to the region's other community organizations but rather to supplement or support issues which affect the entire southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and northern Delaware tri-state regions.

Working through a series of seven committees (Aviation, Energy, Environmental, Ports, Real Estate Development & Land Usage, Water and Transportation) The PENJERDEL Council strives to provide an opportunity for members to receive and exchange the latest information on current political, economic and cultural developments in this tri-state region. A recent example would be a presentation by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter's Director of the Office of Sustainability, Dr. Mark Alan Hughes, to the Board of Directors.

Through the years PENJERDEL has been proud to advocate and support such important projects as stabilized and predictable funding for mass transportation, lighting of the Benjamin Franklin bridge, the Kimmel Center, the sports complex, airport expansion and improved highway systems - to list but a few.

With the approach of the year 2009 and the introduction of terms such as "LEEDS", "sustainability" and "green vision" PENJERDEL looks forward to a series of seminars led by key environmental specialists concerning the impact/change new technology will have on business in this 21st century.

Join other leading business executives as we identify and highlight the issues that enhance economic development opportunities in the PENJERDEL region.

How we work.
PENJERDEL works through a wide range of subcommittees: Aviation, Energy, Environmental, Ports, Real Estate Development and Land Usage, Transportation and Water. Each committee is chaired by a leader prominent in that field.

Regularly scheduled meetings bring the news and the newsmakers of the day to our members. Your membership entitles you to serve on relevant committees and attend any or all of these meetings. You will meet the people you need to talk to. You will discover ideas, studies and information to help your business reach maximum productivity.

Why PENJERDEL.
Membership in PENJERDEL provides unique opportunities to advocate key issues with other leaders in business, government and academia. We join together, when the potential is right, with other regional groups to provide united fronts which will improve the business climate.

Your employees benefit from the exposure your company's membership provides. We work to improve every aspect of our infrastructure, to create world-class tourism sites, sports and entertainment assets, readily available water and energy, premium design and land use, and optimal respect for the environment.

Accomplishments.
Working with various leaders PENJERDEL has been involved in some very recognizable achievements in our tri-state area. Among these are the support and advocacy for significant improvements at Philadelphia International Airport, the championing of Philadelphia's sports stadiums, joining those in support of keeping the Philadelphia Naval Yard open, promoting other infrastructure improvements in our region, presenting a Green Vision forum, which is on-going, highlighting conservation and sustainability goals and achievements and the Tri-Link concept, also on-going, focusing on the potential connectivity of all transportation modes.

The future starts now. And here.
Under the leadership of some pretty terrific people, PENJERDEL gets the job done. If you'd like to be a part of an action oriented organization, or want more information, contact our membership chair at 215-972-0900.
