62nd Annual Awards Luncheon Honorees

The PENJERDEL Council strives to provide opportunities to its members to receive and exchange the latest ideas and information on current political, economic and cultural developments in the tristate region.

PENJERDEL is one of only a few organizations that serves beyond the City limits and encompasses the entire Delaware Valley.

The organization has had many accomplishments this year, and many individuals and businesses to thank.

We were very appreciative of Alan Butkovitz – the outgoing controller of the City of Philadelphia – and his key staff who spoke at an event toward the beginning of the year. They discussed the importance of running government efficiently, and how there are many aspects of the business world that can be applied in managing the city.

This past spring, we were excited to be joined by Mike Dahl, who serves as the executive director of Broad Street Ministry. Mike discussed the issue of homelessness and how his organization helps Philadelphians living in deep poverty stabilize their lives through a unique offering of meals and social services. Without an address, it is almost impossible to get a job. Broad Street Ministry provides a mailing address to those who need it, giving them a chance to move ahead in the world. He also discussed how local businesses give back and donate time and money to their cause.

We were honored to host Pamela McCormick, the director of legislative affairs for SEPTA, for a discussion on Project HOME. The mission of the Project HOME community is to empower adults, children, and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty and to alleviate the underlying causes of poverty. Through a partnership between SEPTA and the City of Philadelphia, Project HOME’s walk-in engagement center Hub of Hope will expand, moving into a permanent location in the concourse below city hall to offer year-round services.

This past summer we hosted an energy symposium discussing innovations in the field. The event was open to those in the tristate area and attracted speakers like Chantel Hendrzak from PJM Interconnection and thought leaders from traditional utilities like PECO and PGW, as well as entrepreneurial organizations like Net Zero Microgrid Solutions, Community Energy, CHZ Technologies, and SEPTA. We had the honor of being the first to host an event at the newly opened Museum of the American Revolution, which if you have yet to visit, you ought to check it out soon.

As one of the original supporting organizations, PENJERDEL was pleased to participate in the 30th Anniversary of the Ben Franklin Bridge Lighting as a sponsor. The bridge was first illuminated on Sept. 17, 1987. The red white and blue lighting and celebration of patriotism was hosted by the Delaware River Port Authority and also marked the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.

Future committed speakers in the coming year include Vanguard CEO F. William McNabb. We are excited to learn more about his organization’s new office in Center City. We also plan on having programing that supports local education. We have previously heard from of School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. William Hite, and with the important role the business community can play in the future with the dissolution of the School Reform Committee, we look forward to hearing from him again.

I personally invite you and your staff to meet and participate, as a PENJERDEL Council member, with such speaking programs held throughout The PENJERDEL Council year. If you are not a member, PLEASE JOIN US TODAY!

Without the support and efforts of our board of directors, sponsors, and of course our Executive Director Andy Warren, this event would not be possible. I cannot thank them enough for all that they do.

In closing, I would be remiss not to congratulate John Smith, Saint Gobain, and Manko, Gold, Katcher, & Fox as our 2017 Outstanding Leaders!

“Thank you so much PENJERDEL for helping to put the right people in the room.  The event went flawlessly. There were over 425 people there, and everyone seemed very positive!”
